California (c. 1950)
An Original Shaded Relief Map Design
Zoom in to see the details →
This piece is based on the original Road Map of the State of California, 1950, published by the California Department of Public Works during a period when road travel was reshaping the state. Following World War II, California experienced tremendous growth as new communities emerged, cities expanded, and the automobile became an increasingly important part of everyday life.
Created for practical navigation, the original map documents California's extensive network of highways and secondary roads, from the rugged mountains of the Sierra Nevada to the sprawling cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Its intricate details offer a fascinating glimpse into the state's geography and transportation system at a pivotal moment in its history, just six years before the introduction of the Interstate Highway System.
For this artwork, I used that historic map as the foundation and reimagined it with original color work and detailed terrain shading. By introducing new colors, carefully developed shadows, and a greater sense of geographic depth, I transformed the original cartography into something that goes beyond its practical purpose. Mountains, valleys, and coastlines take on a more lifelike appearance, while the historic roads and geographic details remain central to the composition.
Rather than a straightforward reproduction, the result is an original artistic rendering that brings together historic cartography, modern geographic visualization, and fine art. It preserves the character and historical significance of the 1950 map while offering an entirely new way to explore California's remarkable landscape.

MAKING THE WORLD LOOK 3D
The science behind shaded relief
Take a look at how our maps are made. Each piece starts with real terrain data and is carefully rendered to highlight elevation, scale, and texture. The result is a detailed topographic print with a subtle 3D illusion that reads as artwork, not a chart.
Every decision is intentional, from how light and shadow are handled to how the terrain is balanced across the page. Each print is produced one at a time to preserve clarity and depth, creating a piece that feels considered, tactile, and meant to live on a wall.
